The Scientific Method I. Problem (I wonder) What am I interested in learning more about? What am I trying to find the answer to? Write a statement or question about the focus.
II. Hypothesis (I think) Brainstorm ways to find some answers about the PROBLEM. Develop wording about the PROBLEM that can be tested. What could the answer to the PROBLEM be if I tested it?
III. Experiment (I do) Design an experiment that will test the HYPOTHESIS. Carry out the experiment. (Follow safety precautions.) Collect data and organize it in a clear manner to be understood by others. (tables, graphs, charts, photos, etc.) Gather enough data to draw valid CONCLUSIONS.
IV. Interpret Results (I understand) Study the data and interpret the results of the EXPERIMENT. Analyze results by looking for patterns and trends. Do the results of my EXPERIMENT answer or agree with my HYPOTHESIS?
V. Conclusions (I found out) Study the INTERPRETATION of the data. What did I learn? Try to answer the statement of the PROBLEM. CONCLUSIONS are only based on the data collected. The success of your science fair project is not based on proving your HYPOTHESIS right or wrong , but, in applying the scientific method properly.
